Today's Hamdan decisionThe Supreme Court's dismissal of the Bush administration's military commissions for the Guantanamo prisoners is pretty dry reading. But then, it's a pretty cut-and-dried issue: essentially, the Court made the startling (to Bushites) observation that you can't just make up the law as you go. The scary lesson that Hamdan teaches us is that the only thing currently standing between American democracy and an executive branch autocracy is John Paul Stevens' bath mat. |
