My charges continue to amaze me

Here's an email I received, verbatim.

Heloo Rooney
the last Question for our outlone that is due tomorrow. The question is ( things i would like help with in writing this up) is this question defined as if we have some things to ask you about to help us . do i get the question right ????

It's a meta-cry for help. That's philosophy for you.

Proper Spelling Optional

So I see that Mr. Rooney has finally come in contact with the new generation of Americans who are, I gather from what I see in the media, going to take over this nation someday (and I suspect, finish the job of running everything into the ground...but that's a conversation for another time and place). My own dealings with said generation has been similar -- in that, they (being of the ilk who seem to take great delight from watching people mix Mentos and Pepsi cola together online endlessly...mind-numblingly endlessly) seem to believe they are being oh-so 'Post Modern' by dropping such time honored symbols of civilization (proper capitalization, grammar and the ability to transmit ideas within a commonly agreed upon framework most might label as 'syntax' or 'logic').

Yet I feel as if I'm getting ahead of myself (or in over my head, pick your mixed metaphor) since I work in Hollywood...and everyone knows that is just about the last place one should seek any measure of reason and/or pure intelligence.

Which is a roundabout way of saying that one day (sooner rather than later) Mr. Rooney, your entertainment choices will be either wholly created and/or dictated by a well-suited boob of the variety who was in one of your classes.

We can all sleep badly tonight with such thoughts in our heads....

Nah

Those students who produce these emails barely got out of high school, and don't even grasp the basic points of how to suck up to a professor. Since they lack either element in the unstable cocktail of extreme self-aggrandizement and self-abasement necessary to go far in Hollywood, I'm not too worried.

Besides, the only TV shows I watch regularly nowadays are The Venture Brothers, Mythbusters, and Doctor Who. And dummies just can't write smartass very well.
